Jester Letter

Calling fellow female geeks

My friend and I recently got super into playing Dungeons and Dragons. We’re both at different scales of nerdiness. For example, I watched Sailor Moon as a kid and Earthbound is my all-time favorite video game of all time. MaryBeth, on the other hand, maxed out her geek at The Sims. And honestly we both have been suppressing some facets of our inner-nerd since reaching adulthood.

But here’s the thing. A few years, we both decided to try a new hobby. We heard it was really creative and freeing. We could escape from some of the terrible realities that surround us, and find a judgement-free way of—just creating! We could draw, write, imagine—and best of all play a super fun game with our friends.

We never expected to be a couple of friends who talk about how cool their new wizard is or how sassy their warlock patron turned out to be. Yet here we are.

While we’ve really fallen in love with the game, we’ve also realized something that’s sort of missing from this realm. Inclusion. We’ve realized that there are a lot of “normal” women out there who don’t think that this game is for them. And they’ve been having a hard time finding a community that allows you to live your normal life and also be a super dork who fantasizes about casting fireballs and finding treasure in a dungeon.

So to help fill that space, MaryBeth and I have decided to create Jester. A newsletter that helps all levels of nerdy women (inclusive to all who identify as such or otherwise) discover the joy in Dungeons & Dragons.

We offer content, original and sourced, that is less dungeon-y and more flowery. We offer advice on how to create characters, how to meet others in the space, how to start your own games, and links to other awesome creators in the same space.

We’re really excited about this project and have loved designing every aspect of the new brand. From the logo, to the illustrations. We’re just getting started, but it’s a side project that I’m really passionate and excited about.

Our first newsletter is set to launch in just a few short months, but in the meantime, you can subscribe if it sounds up your alley.
